Are you ready to pay $50 for that extra bag? It seems that more airlines are following United's lead in charging you if you check more than one bag. So get a good carry on sized roller board and learn how pack more efficiently. And also carry on your personal bag, which could be a back pack or a bag for you laptop and maximize the storage space in that as well. Even if the overhead compartments are full and you have to gate check one of your carry ons it still will be faster than waiting for your luggage at the baggage carousel. The take those bags off the plane first and bring them to you on the jet way.

No ID needed to board a plane in the USA

I read an interesting article in the newspaper today. Surprisingly enough, it's not necessary to have a government ID in order to board an airplane in the United States. Although when you enter the airport all the signs indicate that an ID is required, it is just not the case. For instance, you are on vacation outside of your home stateand you lose your wallet. Are they not going to let you return home?

Now granted after 9/11, our government has to be more careful about who it allows on airplanes. But, if you ever find yourself at an airport without an ID, you can still board the airplane. You will be put through a more rigorous security check and asked several questions. Be prepared for extra screening and tohave the security agents go through your carry-on luggage and take every item out. But my understanding is they cannot deny you access to your flight without probable cause. Even without an ID your name had already been crosschecked versus the federal no-fly list to check for potential terrorists.

Seems funny to me that this being the policy that all the signs in an airport still say that you must have an ID. Obviously this is something that the TSA does not want the general public to know about. And I can understand that they have a difficult job. Usually they are dealing with hurried people who just want to get where they're going and are frustrated with the delays caused by the security screening.

So, if you ever find yourself away from home without your ID, and you need to board a plane, know that it can be done. If they tell you that you must have an ID ask the agent to check with a supervisor about their procedures. Because the TSA say that you can in fact get through security with out an ID. You just have to put up with a little bit of extra scrutiny, and you will be able to board your plane and have a safe trip home.
