Persuasion and Travel

What would it feel like to be able to get into first class on a plane?  Or be upgraded in a hotel to a premier suite or get upgraded to a nicer cabin on a cruise.  Well you can. You just need to master your PERSUASION skill.  It can be fun and it is fun.

It takes some practice but it can and does happen.

I was at a hotel counter in Las Vegas.  I took my daughter will be at the time on purpose.  Sometimes you need props… She was in a back pack on my back, looking around loving the lights.  I joked about a suite.  Now in this hotel, I have always been told they don’t have any… really.   I joked that this was my daughter’s first trip and she would love the extra room and the big bath tub. Next thing you know… we are in.  Tub for like 4, 2 rooms, fridge, wet bar, great view of the strip.

Another time, I was booking a room in a nice hotel in Santa Barbara.  This was our pre-wedding stay.  I called back after I book an ocean view room and questioned about a suite.  Made sure they knew I was a local and that it was for my wedding.  When we checked in, they had upgraded us to a suite.  That I must say was truly amazing.

Now in both of these cases, I did nothing special except ask and be nice or funny.  Built some rapport which allowed me to persuade them into better accommodations.  But it worked.

I have a friend who is a master traveler.  If this subject interests you, please go see Scott Bell at The Road Warrior's review Site.

Happy Travels!

What is going on with the luggage surcharge and American Airlines. I understand that the price of fuel is going sky high. So catch a clue and just raise the price of your tickets. I think people would rather pay up front for their ticket than be nickel and dime'd to death with all these crazy surcharges. Does American Airlines thinks people who travel don't need luggage. And if people learn to fit everything into their carry-on bags. There will be a lot of bags being gate checked at the last minute because all of the overheads will be full.

I feel the same way about providing a decent snack on a flight. Put the cost of a can of soda and a decent sized bag of chips or trailmix in the cost of the ticket. I am traveling and don't want to look for snacks in the airport. Catch a clue and do the little things right. It makes all the difference in the world.

My favorite hotel brand/chain to stay in while on the road is Homewood Suites by Hilton. There are several reasons I like this chain. First the rooms are comfortable with space to make yourself at home. The rooms have a fridge, microwave, dishwasher and stove top. Now I don't cook on the road, but it is nice to be able to take my doggie bag from the restaurant throw it in the fridge and eat it a day or two later. The rooms are well furnished and the beds are comfortable. The price of the room includes breakfast 7 days a week and a lite dinner monday through Thursday. And the food is good. I am on a per diem and what I don't spend I get to keep so the free meals allow me to bank some extra cash each week. And Hilton does a good job of working to ensure your satisfaction. If I have a problem  they usually do not hesitate to resolve it to my satisfaction. Using reward points, free room service etc to make up for the problem.
